# Chilean transfer failure reasons

> What each `error_reason` on a failed Chilean outbound transfer means, and whether to send the payment again later or fix the counterparty details first.

When a Chilean outbound transfer reaches the `failed` status, the `Transfer` includes an `error_reason` that explains why. Fintoc sends a `transfer.outbound.failed` webhook with the same `Transfer`.

* **Fintoc returns the funds.** Fintoc credits the full `amount` back to your available balance. The recipient does not receive the funds.
* **Fintoc does not retry a failed transfer.** To send the payment again, create a new transfer with a new `Idempotency-Key`. Reusing the original key returns the original response.
* **`error_reason` is `null` in every other case.** Transfers in any status other than `failed` and all Mexican transfers report `error_reason: null`.
* **Split transfers report one reason.** When every part of a [split transfer](/guides/business-accounts/outbound-transfers#large-transfers-in-chile) fails, the `error_reason` comes from the last part that failed.

## Failure reasons

The **Action** column tells you whether to send the payment again later or to fix something before you send it again:

| `error_reason` | Description | Action |
| :- | :- | :- |
| `recipient_institution_timeout` | The recipient's bank did not respond in time. | Retry later with a new transfer. |
| `recipient_institution_unavailable` | The recipient's bank is unavailable, for example during scheduled maintenance. | Retry later with a new transfer. |
| `invalid_recipient_account` | The recipient's bank reports that the account number is invalid. | Fix `counterparty.account_number`, then send a new transfer. |
| `recipient_account_not_found` | The account number does not exist at the recipient's bank. | Check `counterparty.account_number` and `counterparty.institution_id`, then send a new transfer. |
| `recipient_account_closed` | The recipient's account is closed. | Ask the recipient for another account. |
| `invalid_recipient_holder_id` | The recipient's bank reports that the Chilean tax ID (RUT) is invalid. | Fix `counterparty.holder_id`, then send a new transfer. |
| `invalid_holder_id_account_relationship` | The RUT does not belong to the holder of the account. | Confirm `counterparty.holder_id` and `counterparty.account_number` with the recipient, then send a new transfer. |
| `account_type_not_enabled` | The recipient's account type cannot receive this transfer. | Check `counterparty.account_type`. If it is correct, ask the recipient for another account. |
| `recipient_account_disabled_for_tef` | The recipient's account is not enabled to receive electronic funds transfers (TEF). | Ask the recipient to enable transfers with their bank or to give you another account. |
| `product_account_not_enabled` | The recipient's account product is not enabled to receive transfers. | Ask the recipient for another account. |
| `recipient_account_credit_restricted` | The recipient's account has a restriction that blocks incoming funds. | Ask the recipient to resolve the restriction with their bank or to give you another account. |
| `recipient_institution_amount_limit_exceeded` | The amount exceeds the maximum that the recipient's bank accepts. | Send a smaller amount, or ask the recipient for an account at another bank. |
| `system_amount_limit_exceeded` | The amount exceeds the maximum that the Chilean low-value payments clearing house (Cámara de Pagos de Bajo Valor) accepts. | Send a smaller amount. |
| `unknown` | The recipient's bank or the clearing house returned a reason that does not map to any other value. | Check the counterparty details. If new transfers keep failing with `unknown`, contact Fintoc support with the transfer `id`. |
