# Account Number (CLABE)

This page explains how Fintoc accounts relate to account numbers in Mexico and Chile. Fintoc separates **accounts** from **account numbers**. An account number points to an account instead of having a one-to-one relationship with the account.

Fintoc links each inbound transfer to its destination account number. You can add `metadata` to account numbers and associate them with your internal business IDs for reconciliation.

## 🇲🇽 Mexico

In Mexico, you can assign multiple account numbers to one account. These account numbers use the standardized Mexican bank account number (CLABE) format. Fintoc creates a default account number with each account, and you can create additional account numbers.

Fintoc records balances and transaction activity at the account level, not the account number level. If one account has five account numbers, Fintoc aggregates all balances and transaction activity under that account.

## 🇨🇱 Chile

In Chile, each account has one account number that identifies the account. You cannot assign multiple account numbers to an account.

You can assign `metadata` to account numbers in Chile to support your internal workflows.

# Root account numbers

When you create an account, Fintoc automatically generates a **default account number**. Outbound transfers use the default account number as the sender because Fintoc tracks balances at the account level.

# Account number reassignment

You cannot reassign or reuse account numbers across accounts. Fintoc permanently associates each account number with its original account.

# Account number status

Fintoc enables account numbers by default. You can use the Fintoc API to disable an account number. Fintoc automatically rejects inbound transfers sent to a disabled account number.

# Account number limit

By default, you can create up to 100,000 account numbers per organization. Contact your sales representative to request a higher limit.
